Basically, if you’re happy to watch TV for three hours a day or continually peruse celebrity gossip websites and social media streams, you cannot – with any degree of self-awareness – call video games a waste of time. Despite popular stereotypes, games are sociable and inclusive, with large, supportive communities and some brilliant events. Games have been shown to improve hand-eye coordination, cognitive flexibility, decision making, even vision. Games are respected enough for Bafta to accept them into its remit, enough for Moma to put a range of titles into its permanent collection, and enough for major art spaces like the Barbican and the Grand Palais museum in Paris to run exhibitions. Yes! The medium has matured hugely over the last five years, and there is a vast range of experiences available, from big blockbusting open-world adventures about marauding gangsters, to teeny, highly personal indie games about coming out. What a disappointment. So for all the potential gamers out there who are thinking about taking up a joypad but don’t know where to start, or which games to try, or what a joypad looks like, here is a quick guide: Given that the technology is readily available for infinite board set ups, scoring, timers, competition mode, etc., I was expecting so much more. It’s fun for my daugher, who just turned seven, but any adult will quickly be finished with this app. You will complete the entire game and enter the world of irritating sales ads within twenty minutes of opening it. There is no timer and no scoring, so it’s just rote matching. There are only six boards to this app, they are mostly quite easy, and once you’ve completed them you are prompted after every board to buy more games. I downloaded this app before a long flight back from Hawaii, thinking that it could keep me entertained for a couple hours. Unfortunately this is just a quick teaser of mahjongg. I therefore expected that this game would be a pretty complete mahjongg game that could at least keep up with the games in production before today’s programmers were even born. This is old technology so the coding should be pretty much cut and paste. Mahjongg computer games have been around for at least twenty years, since the days when they were downloaded from floppy drives.
